December 29th marks the opening date of our new larger location in downtown Nashville within Trademark Business Center II.  Vice President Dan Terranova, P.E, manages the office and oversees the geotechnical engineering, and construction observation and testing services. This office, which serves all parts of Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky, also has an expanded soils and concrete testing lab, and serves as a hub for our geotechnical and environmental consulting services. This model allows clients to benefit from our coordinated effort and its associated cost benefits.

We are happy to announce the appointment of Shawn Sullivan to V.P.

Shawn joined GTA in 2015 as the Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Office Manager of our new Raleigh, NC location. He has been instrumental in growing the office and now serves as a Vice President of the firm.

Shawn is a licensed professional engineer in North Carolina with 19 years of experience providing geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing services for commercial and industrial facilities, low- and high-rise buildings, and single- and multi-family residential projects. He is particularly knowledgeable of the North Carolina Triangle and Triad area markets, geologic conditions, and associated challenges.

He has extensive experience in development of design recommendations for a wide variety of projects requiring shallow, intermediate, and deep foundations, stormwater management facilities, earthwork, rock excavation, flexible and rigid pavements, geologic studies, geophysical surveys, damage studies, groundwater and drainage, retaining walls, and slope stability. Additionally, Shawn has experience providing in-situ pressuremeter and dilatometer testing and data analysis; vibration blast monitoring, shear wave velocity testing, seismic refraction testing; and building services including property condition assessments. He is also proficient in laboratory testing following ASTM and AASHTO standards.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Geotechnical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a Mathematics Minor from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is also a member of several professional and trade organizations including: American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Professional Engineers of NC (PENC), American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), Geo-Institute, Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and Urban Land Institute (ULI).

Shawn has completed the ACEC Future Leaders program, and Fundamental of Professional Practice program, while achieving first in class honors. He currently manages the GTA Raleigh operation, while assisting our team of Field Scientists, Project Managers, and Engineering Technicians, providing geotechnical, environmental, and construction testing services for a variety of healthcare, commercial, infrastructure, high-rise office, and residential projects.

We are pleased to announce that Randy Daub, P.E., has been promoted to Associate of GTA.

Randy manages GTA’s Northeastern Ohio (Alliance) and Pittsburgh Metro (Beaver Falls) offices which focus on providing geotechnical engineering and construction observation and testing services for civil engineers, architects, owners and developers, public and private schools and universities, municipalities and counties, general contractors, and earthwork contractors.

During his 25+ years of practice, and past 2 years with GTA, Randy has earned a reputation for solving geotechnical problems and providing a high level of personal service to clients. Randy’s responsibilities as Associate include leading the offices and continuing to develop GTA as a strong regional presence. Randy is also responsible for overseeing subsurface explorations and developing geotechnical recommendations for a wide variety of public and private projects requiring shallow and deep foundations, stormwater management facilities, earthwork and excavation, flexible and rigid pavement, groundwater and drainage, retaining walls, and slope stability. Additionally, he is responsible for geotechnical observations and third-party observation and testing services during construction.

Randy is a licensed professional engineer in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He received his MBA degree at Youngstown State University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University. He is a past president and current vice president for American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Youngstown Chapter and is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Northeast Ohio Chapter, ASCE Akron-Canton and Youngstown Chapters, as well as American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Cuyahoga Valley and Franklin, PA Sections.

GTA’s Richmond office has been established to better support our existing clients who have projects in central and southern Virginia. This new location serves residential, commercial, industrial, energy, and institutional clients, contractors, architects, and civil engineering firms by providing timely, value-based solutions to problematic conditions and construction challenges. Services provided out of our Richmond office include geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, and construction materials testing.

The office is led by Eric Church, P.E., who was born and raised in Louisa County, VA. Eric attended Virginia Military Institute where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil and environmental engineering in 2011. He later went on to earn his Master of Engineering degree in geotechnical engineering from University of South Carolina. For the past 11 years, Eric has been working out of GTA’s Abingdon, Maryland location, specializing in geotechnical engineering and construction observation and testing services. As Associate and Manager of the Richmond office, Eric’s responsibilities include managing geotechnical and construction observation and testing projects, and client development.

Eric is a registered professional engineer in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland and is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, Urban Land Institute, Building Congress & Exchange, ICSC - Innovating Commerce Serving Communities, and Greater Richmond Association for Commercial Real Estate.

We are pleased to announce that David Whitney has joined GTA!

With the hiring of David Whitney as a Senior Wetland Scientist at our Orlando location, GTA is better equipped to provide natural resource consulting services to our clients in the Southeast region. David, who previously worked for Universal Engineering Sciences, and more recently, Environmental Consulting & Technology, has more than 22 years of experience performing a wide range of environmental and ecological related work in the state of Florida.

An alumnus of University of Central Florida, David holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Biological Sciences and Liberal Studies. David has received additional training and certifications some of which include: CFAEP & FDEP Wetland Delineations, SWFWMD Hydric Soils, and ASTM International Property Condition Assessment training; Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Authorized Gopher Tortoise Agent; Florida Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater Erosion Control Inspector; and AHERA Asbestos Facility Inspector and Asbestos Supervisor. He is also an active member in Florida’s and Central Florida’s Association of Environmental Professionals chapters.

David has extensive knowledge of regulatory rules and regulatory permitting criteria of federal, state, and local agencies for projects related to residential, commercial, and industrial development, along with water, wastewater, stormwater/drainage, and transportation projects. His field experience includes wetland assessments and delineations, threatened and endangered species assessments, surveys, permitting, and relocations, lake restoration, and vegetation surveys/mapping. David provides coordination, negotiation, and design services for requisite wetland mitigation areas. He is also experienced in stormwater facility inspections, and NPDES inspections, as well as asbestos containing building material (ACBM) inspections for all renovation or demolition work, commercial, industrial, and residential property condition assessments, and Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.

We are pleased to announce that GTA Associates, Inc. (GTA) has relocated our Raleigh office, formerly on Chapel Hill Road, to Building 2 within the Merritt Midway Business Park, in Knightdale, NC. This new, larger space accommodates our growing company and includes an expanded soil, concrete, and asphalt testing lab allowing us to better serve the needs of our clients.

GTA has two locations in North Carolina. We opened our original Raleigh office in 2015. Our Charlotte office was opened in 2006. The new Raleigh area office in Knightdale is managed by Shawn Sullivan and provides geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, natural resource services, and construction observation testing and special inspection services for residential, commercial, utility, and infrastructure projects. This office is supported by the technical expertise and resources of our other 20 offices and 500 employees.

Travis joined GTA’s Georgetown, Delaware office in 2017. He is a professional engineer who is responsible for overseeing and managing geotechnical engineering and construction observation and testing services projects performed by GTA’s Georgetown, Delaware office. In this role, he coordinates and oversees drilling and other subsurface exploration operations, laboratory testing, and engineering evaluations, and prepares geotechnical exploration reports for a wide range of projects.

As an Associate, his responsibilities include mentoring and providing training to junior staff members, interviewing, hiring, business development, managing drilling operations, as well as developing new clients and project opportunities in Southern Delaware and the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Travis’ experience includes managing geotechnical projects and providing geotechnical analysis and design recommendations for a variety of projects requiring shallow and deep foundations, foundation underpinning, ground modification and stabilization, groundwater studies, stormwater management (SWM) facilities, infiltration, earthwork, flexible and rigid pavement, and soil-cement stabilization. Travis provides technical assistance and oversight to field personnel during drilling and construction operations and testing for a variety of commercial, residential, institutional, and infrastructure projects.

Travis is a licensed professional engineer in Delaware. He received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from University of Delaware with a minor in Civil Engineering and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Civil Engineering from Missouri S&T. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and active participant in Associated Builders and Contractors events.

John Moscati has been named a Vice President of GTA Associates, Inc.’s (GTA) Charlotte, North Carolina office where he oversees geotechnical, environmental, and construction observation and testing projects, as well as operations of the branch and its soils and concrete laboratory. John has 19 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry and joined GTA as an Associate in 2018 to help grow the Charlotte office, which has doubled in size and revenue over the past four years.

John specializes in geotechnical engineering for residential, commercial, industrial, and government projects requiring shallow and deep foundations, stormwater management facilities, earthwork, rock excavation, flexible and rigid pavement, retaining walls, soil improvement, rock blasting, and mass grading. Additionally, he has extensive experience managing construction observation and materials testing for geotechnical quality assurance and quality control, including Chapter 17 – Special Inspections. The Charlotte office performs testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, highway construction, earth retaining structures, and foundations.

John earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology – Earth Sciences from State University of New York College at Buffalo. He is a member of NAIOP, American Concrete Institute, Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, and ABC Carolinas. John is the current Board Chair of the Western Carolinas – Charlotte Chapter at The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation where he is a passionate volunteer year-round with the foundation.

He is currently overseeing construction observation and testing services for a $5M Equalization (EQ) Basin project for the City of Monroe, a 6-story apartment building going up in the heart of South End, high-hazard earthen dam reconstruction, as well as several 100 to 500-acre residential communities for various national builders and investment corporations.

Gautham Pillappa joined GTA in 2021 as the Associate responsible for opening and managing our new Orlando, FL location. Gautham has been instrumental in growing the office and now serves as a Vice President responsible for overseeing geotechnical, environmental, and construction materials testing projects performed out our Orlando office.

Gautham is a licensed professional engineer in Florida, Georgia, and Texas with 17 years of geotechnical engineering and environmental consulting experience. He is particularly knowledgeable of the Central Florida market and geology and specializes in residential, commercial, warehouse, hospitality, industrial, and infrastructure projects. Working with our clients and project teams, Gautham provides geotechnical analysis and design recommendations for a wide variety of challenging development projects throughout Central Florida requiring shallow and deep foundations, stormwater management facilities, earthwork recommendations, flexible and rigid pavement analysis, and slope stability.

Gautham received his Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) from The University of Texas at Arlington, and his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from R.V. College of Engineering in Bangalore, India. He is a member of Geoprofessional Business Association, American Society of Civil Engineers, Associated Builders and Contractors, Contractors Closers & Connections, and Greater Orlando Builders Association.

ROB HOWARD, P.E., NAMED VICE PRESIDENT

With 33 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry, including 21 years with GTA, Rob has been named a Vice President of GTA. Rob is responsible for overall management of construction observation and material testing (COT) / Special Inspection services performed in the eastern Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia regions. Additionally, he serves as the Chair of GTA’s COT Services Leadership Group which provides increased safety awareness; uniform hiring, training, and testing guidelines; a forum for group discussion and problem solving; team building strategies; and training for future leadership for our 21 offices. Rob champions GTA’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and holds a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from the HR Certification Institute. Rob also works closely with our specialized on-boarding and recruitment teams.

Rob is a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania and oversees quality assurance and quality control on a variety of commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial projects. Specifically, Rob is responsible for specialized inspections in the field and laboratory including soil stabilization and ground improvements; shallow and deep foundation systems; masonry, concrete, and steel reinforcement observations; structural steel, cold formed steel, and wood framing observations; spray-applied fire-resistive materials (SFRM); exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS); roadway stabilization, and observation of subsurface explorations. Rob also leads our regional maintenance services including asphalt and concrete pavement evaluations, crack monitoring, water intrusion observation, slope restoration, and sinkhole observation and stabilization consultation services.

Rob earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Drexel University, and he is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Concrete Institute (ACI), International Code Council (ICC), National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, Business Industry Association of Philadelphia (BIA), Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA), and Pennsylvania Aggregate and Concrete Association (PACA).

As a member of GBA, Rob serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and contributed to GBA’s recently published DEI Best Practices document. As member of the PACA, Rob is an active member of the concrete, cementitious materials, and aggregate technical communities and a contributing member of ACI’s Pennsylvania Code Advocacy Group. Mr. Howard provides class instruction for the ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician – Grade I Certification, ACI Strength Testing Certification, and Post-Installed Concrete Anchor (PICA) Installer and Installation Inspector Certifications.

Moreover, Rob is also an active member of Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. where he has held many positions including Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Business Development Committee; Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Lehigh Valley Council; Board of Directors; as well as participation with the Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, and Northeast PA Councils.

Rob is currently overseeing several retail, office, industrial, and mixed-use projects in Pennsylvania including the 1.267M GSF, mixed-use Piazza Alta hi-rise complex in City of Philadelphia. Piazza Alta is a series of steel stud framed buildings over a two-story concrete podium. The tallest tower elements, at 16 stories tall, form a backdrop to a central courtyard plaza edged by retail occupancies in the smaller scale buildings that surround the plaza.

One of Rob’s biggest fulfilments includes Men’s Small Group leadership which provides spiritual growth, relational support, accountability, and physical challenge while providing opportunity to serve our local community and church with spring clean-up and clean-out projects; serving breakfast to our sidewalk neighbors, and annual clothes and food drives to assist our local shelters.

Scott J. Taylor, a Maryland licensed professional engineer with 27 years of experience (19 with GTA), now services as a Vice President of GTA at our Laurel location. Scott is responsible for construction observation and testing (COT) for geotechnical and environmental quality assurance & quality control, and for providing construction phase consultation. Within the past 10 years, Scott has managed 400 projects, including commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional projects, totaling more than $19 million in fees. Scott has overseen the COT department in the Laurel office since joining GTA.

He oversees observation and testing of soils; concrete; asphalt; highway construction; earth retaining structures; shallow, intermediate and deep foundation; reinforced, tilt-up, precast and post-tension concrete construction; masonry construction; light-gauge and structural steel framing. Scott also provides geotechnical analyses, recommendations, and reports, plans and specifications for building, bridge and highway projects involving shallow foundations, lateral support systems, soil improvement, rock blasting, and cuts and fills.

Scott received his bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and is a member of American Concrete Institute and Urban Land Institute.

Scott was the COT services project manager for Liberty Harbor East, a 23-story 750,000-SF mixed-use building in Baltimore, as well as Waugh Chapel Business Park in Anne Arundel County which recently received the Award of Excellence for Best Industrial Park from NAIOP MD. He is currently overseeing several commercial, residential, and institutional projects in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Ben Myers, a licensed professional engineer with 30 years of experience (17 with GTA) providing environmental consulting and engineering services, has been named a Vice President of GTA.

Ben specializes in overseeing and managing all facets of environmental investigation and remediation projects for private clients, local and state governments, and federal agencies. Specific environmental factors include brownfields redevelopment; hazardous waste site investigation and remediation; Phase I and Phase II site assessments; UST and AST evaluations, compliance, removals, installations, and closures; remediation system design, installation, operation and maintenance, and closure; landfill siting, monitoring, closure, and post-closure compliance; environmental facility compliance assessments and monitoring; water, wastewater, and septic treatment system evaluation, selection, design, and repairs/upgrades; environmental assessments and remediation associated with building sites; facility decommissioning surveys (e.g., asbestos, mold, lead, regulated materials); groundwater evaluation/monitoring and remediation associated with spills and leaks of regulated materials; and permitting and permit compliance (air, stormwater discharge, NPDES). Project sites include former industrial properties, landfills, shooting ranges, military facilities, orchards, gas stations, petroleum refineries, and chemical plants.

Ben is a licensed professional engineer in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania and holds a Maryland Underground Storage Tank Remover license. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Bucknell University and is a member of the York County Economic Alliance, and Manufacturer’s Association of South Central PA.

He is currently overseeing multiple projects in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania including a 2,000,000-square-foot industrial building redevelopment, spill response and remediation at a trucking terminal, and the redevelopment of a former marine construction facility.

Sarah Dalton has been promoted to the position of Vice President of GTA and is responsible for overseeing and managing geotechnical engineering and construction observation and testing services projects performed by GTA’s Sterling, Virginia office.

Sarah is a geotechnical engineer with 18 years (14 with GTA) of experience managing geotechnical projects and providing geotechnical analysis and design recommendations for a variety of projects requiring shallow and deep foundations, stormwater management (SWM) facilities, infiltration, earthwork, rock excavation, flexible and rigid pavement, geologic studies, damage studies, groundwater and drainage, retaining walls, and slope stability. Her expertise includes geotechnical design for pavement, including rigid and flexible systems; stabilized slopes, including pier design, geogrid reinforcement, basket face, and toe wedges; foundations, including deep, shallow, intermediate and grade beams; SWM systems, including infiltration testing, pervious pavement, and dam remediation; lime stabilization and soil cement programs; and retaining walls, including: MSE walls, gravity walls, post and panel, cantilever walls, stabilized aggregate systems, tiered wall systems, and combination systems. Sarah provides technical assistance and oversight to field personnel during drilling and construction operations and testing for a variety of commercial, residential, institutional, and infrastructure projects.

She is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia. With a Major in Civil Engineering and a Minor in Environmental Engineering, Sarah earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University.

Sarah has worked on multiple data center projects throughout Virginia and Maryland including in-house thermal resistivity testing (in-situ, and dry out curves) on soil, rock, and concrete. Through these projects, Sarah has overseen the design of several complicated wall systems including a >50-foot-tall MSE retaining wall and 40-foot-tall soil nail wall.

One of Sarah’s many projects over the years include Subsection 2C of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway reconstruction and expansion project in Virginia where she was the geotechnical project manager. This complex, 2.5-mile stretch of I-66 took 4 years to complete.

Sarah is currently overseeing several projects in Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia, including data center, warehouse, institutional, solar farm, and residential projects.

Eric Church has been promoted to the position of Vice President of GTA and is responsible for overseeing and managing geotechnical engineering, environmental, and construction materials testing (CMT)/special inspection service projects performed by GTA’s Richmond, Virginia office, which he opened in September 2022.

Eric is a geotechnical engineer with 11 years of experience, all of which has been with GTA, and specializes in geotechnical site investigations, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE), gravity retaining wall, and reinforced soil slope designs, chemical soil stabilization design, using both lime and soil cement, flexible and rigid pavement designs, shallow, intermediate, and deep foundations, and settlement and slope stability analyses. In addition, Mr. Church oversees CMT/special inspections in the field and laboratory for a wide variety of multi-family, residential, commercial, industrial, energy, utility, and institutional projects performed by the office.

Eric is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil and environmental engineering from the Virginia Military Institute, and his Master of Engineering degree in geotechnical engineering from the University of South Carolina. Eric is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP), Urban Land Institute (ULI), Innovating Commerce Serving Communities (ICSC), and Greater Richmond Association for Commercial Real Estate (GRACRE).

Recently, Eric has been the Geotechnical Engineer of Record, provided geotechnical design/recommendations, or over-seen construction on over 7 million-square-feet (sf) of industrial warehouses, 2 self-storage facilities totaling 8 stories and +270,000 sf, Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels, 312,000 sf of research and development (R&D) laboratories, more than 20 miles of a new natural gas pipeline, operational facilities and a new quarry pit, that included 5 continuous miles of above grade and subterranean conveyor systems for a world leader in the manufacturing of Portland cement, various residential and multi-family developments, and over 500,000 sf of MSE and gravity retaining walls.

We are pleased to announce that Travis P. Caraway, P.E., has been promoted to Associate of GTA!

Travis joined GTA’s Georgetown, Delaware office in 2017. He is a professional engineer who is responsible for overseeing and managing geotechnical engineering and construction observation and testing services projects performed by GTA’s Georgetown, Delaware office. In this role, he coordinates and oversees drilling and other subsurface exploration operations, laboratory testing, and engineering evaluations, and prepares geotechnical exploration reports for a wide range of projects.

As an Associate, his responsibilities include mentoring and providing training to junior staff members, interviewing, hiring, business development, managing drilling operations, as well as developing new clients and project opportunities in Southern Delaware and the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Travis’ experience includes managing geotechnical projects and providing geotechnical analysis and design recommendations for a variety of projects requiring shallow and deep foundations, foundation underpinning, ground modification and stabilization, groundwater studies, stormwater management (SWM) facilities, infiltration, earthwork, flexible and rigid pavement, and soil-cement stabilization. Travis provides technical assistance and oversight to field personnel during drilling and construction operations and testing for a variety of commercial, residential, institutional, and infrastructure projects.

Travis is a licensed professional engineer in Delaware. He received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from University of Delaware with a minor in Civil Engineering and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Civil Engineering from Missouri S&T. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and active participant in Associated Builders and Contractors events.

Andrew D. McKeen, P.E., has been named a Vice President of GTA and is responsible for overseeing and managing geotechnical engineering projects performed out of our Laurel office.  Andy is also responsible for providing construction phase consultation for projects under construction in the Baltimore-Washington corridor.
 
Andy is a geotechnical engineer with 15 years (13 with GTA) of experience providing geotechnical analysis, design, and consulting services for a variety of projects throughout central and southern Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  Andy’s expertise includes shallow and deep foundations, ground improvement, slope stability, retaining wall design, geotechnical and structural instrumentation, stormwater management (SWM) facilities, flexible and rigid pavements, groundwater, and subsurface drainage plans.  Andy has also been instrumental in expanding our in-situ testing services, to include Dilatometer (DMT), and Pressuremeter (PMT) testing, both of which GTA performs in-house.
 
He is a licensed professional engineer in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia and holds a M.Eng. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University. Andy is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, Maryland Building Industry Association (MBIA), NAIOP-Maryland, Urban Land Institute – Baltimore, and the 7×24 Exchange DC Chapter.
 
Andy was the geotechnical engineer of record for the Avalon Harbor East, a 23-story 550,000-SF, 380-unit apartment building in downtown Baltimore.  Andy also leads the geotechnical services for GTA on the St. Charles, and Pinegrove residential developments in southern Maryland. These two developments will total over 7,000 residential units when fully developed.  In addition to these projects, Andy is currently overseeing geotechnical services for residential, retail, commercial, and industrial projects in Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Howard, St. Mary’s, Montgomery, Charles, and Frederick Counties in Maryland, as well as the District of Columbia.
